MEDIATION

David Abankwah

READ: Matthew 5:9

For there is one God, and there is one MEDIATOR between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

-1 Timothy 2:5 | KJV

A typical Ghanaian child will bear with me that, when he is being punished severely (usually by caning) by his father, his mother will come to his rescue. Usually, the mother’s feeling of fear of injury or death for the child being punished beyond what is stipulated, is what makes her confront her husband to limit the number the strokes. Some mothers go to the extend of stopping the punishment by holding the cane or getting it out of the hand of her husband. The feeling of gratefulness for escaping the punishment is a fairly indebted one of the child towards his mother.

That is why majority of children like getting close to their mothers. And when there are father’s and  mother’s days, there comes a vast difference of gifting these parents receive. While one receive towel, another gets the lion’s share. It is the power of mediation that reaps the dividend. Fathers are seen as strict, straight and no- nonsense gods of the house. For a child to approach his father for an urgent need, he has to hire his mother as a mediator. Mothers always have a soft touch starter, that can propel any man’s engine to ignite.

I quite remember I took a French leave from the house to play outside. When I came, my father was around. I knew danger was looming because anytime my father returns from work and I was not around, I would be caned. So in my head, I was calculating the strokes I would receive. The punishment that awaited me was sure after seeing a cane beside my father. As he approached me to unleash the fury of hell, my mother came and stood between us and made peace. I was amazed to see the fury of my dad dash out so quickly and that day, I was so lucky to have been spared.

Mediators are usually peacemakers. When Jesus Christ saw that the relationship between God and man was not a good one, he came and died and used His blood as a means of mediation. Nothing can dash out God’s fury without Him seeing the blood of His Son. Still, Jesus is still pleading the course of repentance of sinners. His sole aim is to make peace between God and man. That is what Christians must learn. Our evangelism, prayers, fasting, fellowshipping, Bible reading and meditation and acts of faith, must be centred on the course of mediation.
