RENEWAL
David Abankwah
READ: Romans 12:2

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV

To renew is to reestablish something on a new, usually in an improved manner or basis or to cause something to appear in a new form. Renewing is common in our everyday lives which we don’t even notice. When one wakes up, it is likely for the person to brush his or her teeth. Brushing is to renew your teeth, preventing it from being attacked by plague and to avoid bad mouth odour when talking to people. Another renewing takes place when the person takes a shower. Bathing removes dirt as a result of excretion that sweeps through the pores of the skin and other unseen dirt from the environment.

The body is spared from all kinds of diseases as a result of keeping the body neat. Dirty clothes are removed from the body and new ones are worn. As humans, we try to keep the body neat or tidy always but we forget about our souls. The inner man which does not die, but lives on even after physical death of the body, is what God will judge. What makes you is not your body, but your soul. Your body is just a clothe that the soul wears in order to live in the physical world. For the soul to touch, feel, smell, see and hear the impact of physical things, it needs a flesh. That was why God used dust to create us.

This is because, dust is a physical thing not a spiritual thing. The soul knows its Maker but the body doesn’t. This is because, the body was taken from the earth not from God but the soul came from the nostrils of God together with the breath of life. The breath of life is what bridges the body and the soul making them live together. The moment the breath of life is taken by God, there is a separation between the body and the soul which is called physical death. Instead of man focusing on the soul, more time is spent to please the desires of the flesh. We fail to renew our souls day in and day out.

As it takes physical things to renew the body, it also takes spiritual things to renew the soul. Renewing the soul is believing in Jesus Christ and working the faith through Bible reading, studying and meditation, fasting, daily prayer, evangelism, teaching, fellowshipping, offering, tithing, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The more you focus on spiritual things, the more the flesh is wasted or depleted. You no longer fulfill its desires. Failure to renew the soul day in and day out, leads to weakness that yields the fruits of disloyalty, rebellion, disobedience, backsliding, sin and iniquity.
