ABIDE IN THE VINE
David Abankwah
READ: Psalm 80:8-19

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
-John 15:5 | KJV

A vine is a plant whose stem requires support and which climbs by tendrils or twining or creeping along the ground. Vine also refers to the stem of such a plant. A vine goes through some stages of development. It goes through budding, blossoming, clustering and ripening into the final fruit stage of grapes. Vine was first mentioned in the Bible when the chief cupbearer of Pharaoh who was then in prison, told Joseph his dream when he saw a vine that had three branches. After Joseph interpreted the dream for him, he told him to remember him, but the guy forgot about him. That is the character of most believers now.

It is God who have lifted up to the position we are now, but when we gain grounds, we forget God and we attribute our success to hard work. When they motivate people, it seems they manufactured the term ‘success’. They neglect God who gave them the strength to make wealth (Deuteronomy 8:17-18). This is the reason why when most believers are blessed, they forget God. They stop coming to church. They stop praying. They stop fasting and they stop abiding in God. When you ask them, ‘Oh sister, it has been a while when I saw you in church’. She will reply ‘It is because of my work ooh, hmmm. I don’t have time at all’

They forget that, the foundation of their work and its fruiting is the Word of God. It is Jesus Christ who is the stem of our work, marriages, child-bearing, fame, breakouts, academic excellence, or any other success. The reason why Jesus Christ is the true vine is that, He is the Word of God who is the Stem or Pillar holding the universe and everything in it in place (Colossians 1:17; 2 Peter 3:7). The day Jesus decides to take away His stem, is the day that your life will be under the attack of the destroyer. You will be withered away like a branch worthy of fire. You will not longer be of any use anymore.

Sometimes when we can see far, it is not because we have foresight, but it is because, we are on the shoulder of someone. The kingdom of Jesus is on His shoulders and it is Him alone that we should depend on. He is the true vine that God planted for the world so that through Him, we can also become God’s children (branches). You can abide in the vine by believing in Jesus Christ and working out your salvation with fear and trembling. Make sure you do everything He has commanded so that, you can bear the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. In that case, your soul will be saved on the day of accountability.
