THE COMFORTER

David Abankwah

READ: Matthew 5:4

But the COMFORTER, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

-John 14:26 | KJV

Comfort is a state or situation in which you are relaxed and do not have any physically unpleasant feelings caused by pain, heat, cold, etc. Comfort also means a state or feeling of being less worried, upset, frightened, etc., during a time of trouble or emotional pain. That is one of the works of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Dispensation, the Spirit of God came upon the prophets, Kings and other people and used them for a purpose. After that purpose, He leaves. Note that, the Spirit was not living in men but upon them. So you will see the phrase: ‘And the Spirit of God came upon him….’

The reason why it was so was because the sin of men was not washed away but rather covered. The blood of animals sacrificed only covered the sins of men but was not able to wash away the sins. Why? This is because, the blood of man is greater than the blood of an animal. So if the sins of men could be washed away, then a certain blood greater than the blood of men needed to be shed for the remission of the sins and iniquities of men. At first, God was not pleased by the sacrifice of the blood of animals but was rather waiting to release His Son whose sacrifice only pleases Him. This was the reason why God sent His Son for us.

Furthermore, it was also important for the blood of Jesus Christ to be released for the full-blown work of the Comforter to be complete. One thing about the Holy Spirit is that, before He can live in you, He expects the blood of Jesus to cleanse you first because, He only lives in the blood of Jesus Christ not the blood of animals or humans. So if you have prayed for the coming of the Holy Spirit and yet, you have not received Him, it is because you have not been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Before you can be cleansed, Jesus Christ sees through that indeed you have repented and you won’t go to your vomit again.

When the Holy Spirit comes, He will strengthen you to overcome all manner of situations. The fact that you have the Holy Spirit, doesn’t mean you will not go through serial sufferings. Even when the Spirit comes, one thing you will realise Him doing is that, He will lead you into the desert to be tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1). People will marvel and ask, how did you make it? They don’t seem to realise that, someone called the COMFORTER was in the boat of situations riding and cruising you through the storms with ease.
