PEACEMAKING
David Abankwah
READ: James 3:18
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
-Matthew 5:9 | KJV
When I first heard the sermon on ‘Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God’, I knew I had not been able to make peace when I see two people fighting. My mind was centered on the fact that, when I pass by and two or more people are fighting, I should stop and make peace between them. But you will realise that, those who make peace between people who are fighting, sometimes get beaten in the process. One can intentionally hit you as if he is trying to beat the other person but he is rather laying his frustration on you for coming to interrupt his fight.
Many at times, those who are the weak try doing that so that you will not know that they were being beaten. One day I was home and two of my Aunties were fighting. I intentionally didn’t want to interrupt because I knew they should know better. ‘Two grown ups like these who should have lived a better life for us to imitate are fighting, what should I have to do with this?,’ I thought. The fight got so tensed that one of them said, ‘Won’t you come and stop this fight?’ I knew one was getting beaten in the process, then I stepped in to prevent any further occurrences.
Fight doesn’t come without quarrels, rifts, misunderstanding, stubbornness and rebellion. Whenever there is war, soldiers are sent to make peace. It is the same between us and God. We are enemies to God because of sin and iniquity. From the time man became an enemy to God in the Garden of Eden, God tried to make peace with man starting from Cain. God the Father became the first peacemaker, setting the first example for us to imitate. From that time, God chose Patriarchs, Priests, Prophets, Kings Judges and others to be peacemakers, yet many were still holding grudge against God by living with their self will.
It was not long until God sent His own Son for us to make the perfect peace of sacrifice with His own blood, that, by believing in His Son Jesus Christ and by being cleansed with His blood, you have crossed from the boundary of being a foe into someone whom God loves. After that, God also anoints you with the Holy Spirit to lead you to help others who are enemies to God through evangelism of the gospel and soul winning. Anyone who carries the work of peacemaking is truly a child of God and God specially set aside a blessing for that person and they will reap a harvest of righteousness (James 3:18).
