THE LORD CHASTISES
David Abankwah_
READ: Revelation 3:19
Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. -Hebrews 12:11 | KJV
To chastise, chasten, discipline, punish and penalise, all mean the same in this context of Hebrew 12:11 which means: To correct someone by punishment or suffering. Chastening is a way of pruning the believer from sin, iniquity, pretense, or falsity so that the believer can be refined without having no sin and iniquity in him or her. It is also a way of causing the believer to be more humble or restrained. It is another way of making the believer realise the wrongs he had done so that, he can feel sad about it and repent. It is important for every true believer to go through this process in order to become a true child of God (Hebrews 12:8).
It came to a point in the life of King David, when God subjected all his enemies under his feet and peace reigned, as he got rest from all his enemies that encompassed him. King David sat down and remembered the Lord that it was Him who had given him such victory and for this reason he had to pay back God in the small way that he could. He then realised that for all these years, God had been living in tents and tabernacles from the Exodus from Egypt to Canaan, and from then, God didn’t have a house to stay in the midst of His people (2 Samuel 7:2; 7:6)
When you are blessed, do you remember the Lord and the people through whom the Lord blessed you with? The unfortunate thing is that, when people rise from nobodies to somebodies, they easily forget their helpers. Some even pay back their helpers with evil. The ungratefulness of people today is something that is unheard of. For this reason, many people don’t want to do good again because of the fear of negative feedbacks and ungratefulness they will have in return. It was because of David’s remembrance, that made God told Him a secret about His chastisement in 2 Samuel 7:14.
God made David realise that it will be his own son who will build a house for Him, but his son should note something about Him that, when he does iniquity, he would not let him go scot free. Because He, the Lord is His father, He shall surely chastise him as a son with the rod of men and the stripes of the children of men. The God in the time of David is still the God in our time now. If we say we are children of God, we need to be extra careful with our lives. If you sin, God will forgive you but He shall surely punish you afterwards. You may think it is evil spirits but it is the Lord’s chastisement against you.
