THE MESSIANIC HUMILITY
David Abankwah
READ: 2 Samuel 22:28

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and LOWLY IN HEART: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Matthew 11:29 | KJV

Of all the characters Jesus Christ had that He told us to learn, was His humility. At first I learnt that, when you are a calm person, then that means, you are humble. At times, I thought that, humility was placing your hands at your back while the elderly is talking without uttering any word. At other times, I thought humility was knowing how to exchange pleasantries well especially by saying ‘please’, ‘sorry’, or ‘thank you’ without uttering profane or harsh words in the midst of communications but I was wrong.

Humility is not about saying sorry, please or thank you because there are people who say all these things but they are still filled with pride. There are people who look calm but inside of them, they are arrogant. There are people who can be polite and show acts of reverence towards you by placing their hands at their back while you are talking to them, yet they are only doing that for the reason of favour. There are two main types of humilities I have noted over the years: The Opportunistic Humility and the Messianic Humility.

The Opportunistic humility is the humility people fake in order to gain certain favours from people. In actual sense, they pretend by showing signs of humility, but deep within their heart, they know they are faking. A wife’s humility is tested, when her husband does not have money. You will see that, when you were having much to offer, her submission towards you was one of a kind but when you became ‘broke’, then that is where her true colours are shown. That is what man’s humility is and how far they can go.

But the Messianic Humility is not like that. Jesus Christ valued us more than Himself, that was why He was able to descend and save mankind. He had to humble Himself into the Word for Angel Gabriel to carry Him in his mouth to be presented to Mary. Because of humility, He became a servant: was born in a manger, breastfed by a human, bathed like an ordinary person, taught how to speak, taught how to make furniture and lived his life as a man and not God. Because of His humility, He was able to save us on the cross.
