IN OUR MIDST
David Abankwah
READ: Exodus 34:1-9
The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
-Zephaniah 3:17 | KJV
There is power in fellowshipping. When two or three gather, there is a certain level of influence that one has over the other party – whether it is directly or indirectly. You will bear with me that, the way you speak, think and behave, is all about the influence you have had through the things you have seen, read or heard. Every baby who is born, has an empty memory but through the power of his parents’ or guardians’ fellowships, information is transferred. If you want to overcome sin and iniquity, watch the people and the things you are fond of being in their midsts.
There is no one who can say he is not affected when certain people get close to them. There is no one who can say he is not affected when he comes into contact with certain materials. When you are fond of watching sexy movies, there is no way you can escape lust that leads to fornication, adultery, masturbation, homosexuality, bestiality, pederasty, rape, spiritual marriage or what have you. Being in the midst of evil company will certainly corrupt you. That is why the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:33 that, evil communication corrupts good manners.
God expects us to devote time for fellowshipping with Him because Jesus Christ has promised us to meet us when we meet in His name (Matthew 18:20). Today, there are believers who are fond of having public meetings in the church but when they are home, they can’t have private meetings with the Lord. They pray in church but when they are in the house, they don’t pray. They only fast when the church is fasting. Public fellowship is not enough for God to be in our midst. There are others also who have private meetings with the Lord but when there are church meetings, they don’t go.
There are various merits in having the Lord in our midst. The first thing is that there is a power or strength which is released from God. The strength of God too is the Holy Spirit. No wonder He was released after the disciples fellowshipped in the upper room (Acts 2:1-4). The second benefit is that, there is salvation. Jesus Christ is the salvation of God. He comes when we meet in His name (Matthew 18:20). The third benefit is joy. Anytime God comes into our midst, there is always a change of mood. Your soul is thrilled to have an encounter with his Maker (Psalm 84:2).
