CARDINAL PRAYER TOPIC

David Abankwah

READ: Acts 1:4, 14; 2:1-13

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

-Luke 11:13 | KJV

There are so many prayer topics in the Bible one can pray about. There came a time that the disciples wanted the Lord to teach them the things they needed to pray about. He listed down certain prayer topics for them in Matthew 6:9-13. All of these prayer topics are essential in the life of a Christian, but in all things, we have the one that tops the pecking order and this makes it cardinal. The word cardinal in the context of this usage, means ‘the most important’. Among all the prayer topics in the Bible, the most important thing every Christian should be concerned about most, is the anointing or the Holy Spirit.

It is not bad to pray about cars. It is not equally bad to pray about a land or probably the wisdom to build. It is not evil to pray for abundance of money and blessings. It is not a sin to pray for a husband or wife but are these things most important? No! There is a big issue raised by Paul in the Bible that every believer must be particular about. He says in Romans 8:9 that, if you don’t have the Spirit of Jesus Christ who is the Holy Spirit, you are not part of God’s children. What makes you a Christian is not the fornication you have stopped or probably how you have put a stop to stealing.

What makes you a Christian, is the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit of Christ that can lead you into all righteousness, holiness and sanctification. He is the teacher of the Word of God who gives understanding to the simple. He imparts knowledge and wisdom. He gives counsel and provides might. When He stays in you, sin and iniquity will be impossible for you to do because you will fear the Lord. Lies will also be out of your mouth forever because, He is the Spirit of Truth. In Him, are nine fruits you should bear.

They are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. If you have one prayer topic to pray about always, pray for the Holy Spirit. When people are busy praying about visas, marriage, prosperity, cars, houses, lands, good health, children, and so on, pray for the Holy Spirit. When He comes, He contains everything that pertain to life and Godliness. Even before the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus Christ as a dove in the River Jordan, He prayed for the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:21). Prayer is therefore essential for the coming of the anointing.
