TATTOO
David Abankwah
READ: Genesis 4:10-15
You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or TATTOO yourselves: I am the Lord.
-Leviticus 19:28 | ESV
According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, a tattoo is an indelible mark or figure fixed upon the body by insertion of pigment under the skin or by production of scars. The Bible has a say on tattooing. Today in churches, it seems this topic is less treated because many Pastors who have tattoos on their bodies think it is not necessary to preach against it anymore. Many claim it was the Old Testament that spoke against it and not the New Testament, so when you tattoo yourself, you have not sinned but these same Pastors use the Old Testament especially Malachi 3:8-12 to collect fat tithes and offerings. Wow!
Jesus Christ gave us a will before leaving the earth that, we should be taught about everything He has commanded us in the Bible. Now who is Jesus Christ? When we come to Revelation 1:8, He declares Himself as the ALPHA AND THE OMEGA, THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS, AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME. In this case, Jesus Christ is God. So when you read the Bible, anywhere you see the expression, ‘says the Lord, or the Word of God came’ or ‘I am the Lord’ or verily, verily, I say onto you’, mark those words seriously. Tattoo is something God commands us not to do.
The history behind tattoo in the Bible started with a man called Cain. After he killed his brother, God cursed him by putting a tattoo on his body. God showed us clearly that anyone who tattoos him or herself is cursed. Moreover, anyone who tattoos himself is a fugitive, a wanderer, unproductive or unfruitful, the vengeance of the Lord is upon that person and when you tattoo yourself, you automatically cut yourself away from God’s presence (Genesis 4:10-16). Moreover, God commands us not to tattoo ourselves (Leviticus 19:28). 666 is also about tattoos on the forehead or the hand (Revelation 14:9).
You may say that tattoo didn’t appear in the New Testament. Tattoo is one of the appearances of evil 1 Thessalonians 5:22 talks about and one of the defilements of the body in 2 Corinthians 7:1. All things are lawful but not all things including tattooing is expedient for a Christian (1 Corinthians 6:12). Many who tattoo themselves see it as a life but the life Himself – Jesus Christ (Luke 14:6), didn’t tattoo Himself anywhere in the Bible. Our bodies are also the temple of God and anyone who destroys the temple with tattooing, will also be destroyed by God (1 Corinthians 3:16) in the lake of fire.
