FIRST LOVE

David Abankwah

SERIES: Day 7

³⁷And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with ALL your HEART and with ALL your SOUL and with ALL your MIND. ³⁸This is the GREAT AND FIRST COMMANDMENT.

-Matthew 22:37-38 | ESV

It is true that Jesus Christ didn’t come to destroy the law but to fulfill it. One section of the Old Testament He fulfilled was in the Ten Commandments. The ultimate ten laws were folded into two main parts: Loving God and loving man. That was what Jesus Christ made it clear in Matthew 22:37-39 as He explained it well for our appreciation. Fulfilling the commandments is all about love. If you don’t love, you can’t obey because love is all about obedience not by ‘feelings’ (John 14:15). The measurement of love should not be judged by what you feel or how you feel it but by the metre of obedience.

So when someone tells you, ‘Oh baby, you know what I feel about you today. It is because I love you’, then you need to know where this person is coming from and where he is heading towards. When we look into the Ten Commandments which were folded into love by Jesus Christ, we can see that, the love of God came first and then the love of men followed suit. Why should the love for God be the first and the great commandment? It is for an important reason. The reason is that, when you don’t love God first, you can’t love anybody. If you find it hard to love people, it is because you don’t love God genuinely.

I have noticed one character trait of women that is not good at all. It seems that they always have something bad against people. It’s like there is a sense of bitterness. You can arrange for a meeting and discuss the matter between them, yet, you will see them clashing again. If you have the love of God, Pastors shouldn’t sit on your marriage issues day in and day out. If you have God as your first love, we shouldn’t advice you always concerning the right way you should go. It is Sunday school children who need to be taught that in their period of infancy (Proverbs 22:6).

If you have God as your first love, you wouldn’t sin or commit iniquity again. Again, the love for God must be sourced from three main parts: The mind, the heart and the soul. When you love God with all your soul and give all your heart and mind to your boyfriend or girlfriend, that is not first love. God wants all your heart, mind and soul not some parts of it. So in the day, the One you should have thought about, meditated about, and felt for should be God. If many believers are being checked with the ‘first-lovemeter’ before entry into New Jerusalem, they would be disqualified because they have other things as their first love.

Prayer Diary: Lord, please help me place you first before everyone and everything else as I obey your commandments with all my heart, mind and soul.
