SEXUAL IMMORALITY
David Abankwah
SERIES: Day 14
¹⁶“If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife. ¹⁷If HER FATHER utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money equal to the BRIDE-PRICE for virgins.
-Exodus 22:16-17 | ESV
Many married people are still going through sexual immorality but they are not aware. This is because the rightful person to receive the bride-price was not there. When you read Exodus 22:17, the rightful person who is mandated by God to receive the bride-price is the Father of the daughter you are going to marry as a man. Why, this is because God has made man the head of the family and God respects heads or leaders so much that, before He can come into the marriage, He first needs to communicate with the father before the marriage can be accepted.
For God to be a witness of a certain marriage, it does not come easy like that. The rightful process must be followed otherwise you will live in a fornicating marriage for the rest of your life. In many churches, this is not preached so the men often hand the bride-price to any representative who is not even mandated by the father to receive it. You can’t hand over the bride-price to the mother of the woman you are going to marry, even though she is also a parent. You can’t hand over the bride-price to any other person from the mother’s side.
If the father of the lady is dead, a representative like the head of the father’s family must be present to receive it or any other person from the father’s side. When all of them are dead, the king of the town, or any head or the ambassador of the country the lady comes from (if she has a different nationality) can receive it. Now, there are certain ladies who don’t make their fathers aware that they are marrying, so they will choose any other person to stand in for their biological father to receive the bride-price. Such marriage, God does not recognise it. It is still fornication!
Why don’t you want your biological father to be present at your wedding even though he is alive? You can’t say he didn’t take care of you. If he is even physically challenged, he is still your father. If he is even unwilling to be present, he can delegate someone to stand in for him. The father accepts the marriage and if he likes to share it with his wife, it’s over to him. Some mothers are so envious that, they want the fathers to give them cuts. Allow the fathers to enjoy their day. They have been receiving towels on father’s days for long. Many marriages are breaking down just because the bride-price went into the wrong hands.
Prayer Diary: Lord Jesus, deliver me from any deceit that will land my bride-price into the wrong hands (singles). Help me to be aware and make amends if I had paid mine into the wrong hands (married) in Jesus name, Amen.
