CITY OF DAVID
David Abankwah
READ: 1 Samuel 20:6
For there is born to you this day in the CITY OF DAVID a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
-Luke 2:11 | NKJV
Environment has a bearing or influence on the lives of all. Environment is a key to a person’s character, behaviour, habit, destiny, Godliness and ministry. Even the church you are in, will determine the kind of life you will live. In this case, God has His directives set on the kind of environments we should be in and which we should refrain from. Many people have become prostitutes not because of what they wished they would become but because of the environment of friends they found themselves in some time ago.
No wonder the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:33 that, evil communications corrupt good manners. In the introductory part of the book of Psalms, we saw that, King David stressed on certain environments of the counsel of the ungodly, path of sinners, and seat of the scornful, but the environment he wanted us to be in was the delight and meditation of the law of God (Psalms 1:1). Because God knew that environments could influence lifestyles, He made sure His son was born in a good environment.
The city of David (Bethlehem) was where God choose His Son to be born in. Joseph the earthly father of Jesus Christ could not have become a righteous person without the environment of Bethlehem (hailing from the house and lineage of David) even though he lived most part of his life in Nazareth (Luke 2:4). Mary the earthly mother of Jesus Christ could not have become a virgin without the environment of Nazareth (the city of Galiliee) which she found herself in. Imagine if Mary was living in the environs of Sodom and Gomorrah at that time, she could have become a lesbian!
Bethlehem in ancient Greek word: Βηθλεέμ pronounced as: [bɛːtʰle.ém]; means ‘house of bread’. Because Jesus Christ was also the ‘Bread of life’ (John 6:25-59), He should also find His place in the house of bread. I always say that nothing happens without no reason. There must have been a key reason why our Lord was born in Bethlehem and not Capernaum or Jerusalem. Also, because Jesus Christ was to become the root or Son of David and to be given the keys of David to rule (Isaiah 22:22; Revelation 3:7;) he should also be born in the city of David for him to have that spiritual and physical connection.
