SANCTIFICATION
David Abankwah
READ: Exodus 28

Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
-II Corinthians 7:1 | NKJV

Sanctification which is: ¹to set apart to a sacred purpose or to religious use : CONSECRATE; ²to free from sin: PURIFY; ³a: to impart or impute sacredness, inviolability, or respect to, b: to give moral or social sanction to; ⁴to make productive of holiness or piety. Paul stressed on two main types of sanctification: Physical sanctification (cleansing oneself from the filthiness of the flesh) and spiritual sanctification (cleansing oneself from the filthiness of the spirit). Sanctification is part of Christianity and until you practise it, you can’t perfect holiness before God.

It is the fear of the Lord that leads to deliberate action of setting yourself apart from all sins, iniquities, abominations and transgressions. Sometimes we think we are humans, and as far as to ERR IS HUMAN, no one can be perfect. So we live our lives anyhow and come to God to ask for forgiveness. There are believers who say God is graceful so anytime they sin and they ask for forgiveness, they can be forgiven. In this case, they hire Romans 10:19 and 1 John 1:9 as their lawyer. As the days go by, we shouldn’t conform to the uprising standards and trends of filthiness of this world.

We think that, the Holy Spirit is the One who is coming to take away sins from us so we can be holy. So we pray for Him without preparing the way for Him. Let me tell you something. Before Jesus Christ could come, John the Baptist was sent as a forerunner to make the crooked paths straight, mountains levelled and valleys exalted. That applies to the Holy Spirit because they are all Godhead. For you, there is no forerunner in the name of John the Baptist. The forerunner is YOU! You can only prepare the way for Him through physical and spiritual sanctification.

Physical sanctification includes hygienic way of living. Cleanliness they say is next to Godliness. It is so true that when God wanted to walk in the midst of the camp of the Israelites, He told them to tidy up their surroundings especially their lavatory (digging a hole and covering up their faeces) so He will not come and see filthiness – Deuteronomy 23:12-14. There are believers who are so dirty that washing their underwears is even a problem. They can soak it for years. When you are a dirty person God cannot visit you and the Holy Spirit cannot stay in you. It is physical sanctification that leads to spiritual sanctification.

Lift up prayers unto God to give you the constant strength to set yourself apart in all physical and spiritual sanctification without losing yourself so the Holy Spirit can find His residence in you in the name of Jesus Christ.
