COMMUNICATION SKILLS
David Abankwah
READ: Ephesians 4:29
So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be SWIFT TO HEAR, SLOW TO SPEAK, SLOW TO WRATH;
-James 1:19 | NKJV
If you want to have eternal life, your communication matters. Therefore you need to know how to communicate well. There are so many Christians who being righteous, holy and sanctified pray but they don’t receive answers. Even though God does not hear sinners (John 9:31), it is not automatic for God to answer a righteous person anytime he prays. Reading John 9:31, it goes on to say that, if anyone is a worshipper (giving thanks more than petitions) and doing His will (having the best communication skills in prayer), then God will answer.
Jesus Christ gives one of the best communication skills in prayer in Matthew 6:7. He said: And when you pray, do NOT USE VAIN REPETITIONS as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. -Matthew 6:7 | NKJV. A good speaking skill does not lie in how well you are good in articulation but the coercive effect you can have on your listeners. Communication skill does not lie in speaking alone, but listening too. When we read James 1:19, we get to know the best Biblical communication skills we need to adopt for our lives and ministries.
The first mode is the listening ears (swift to hear). Jesus Christ said, the one who has ears let Him hear what the Spirit says unto the churches (Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22). Everyone has ears, but why is He still saying if anyone has ears? This hearing goes beyond that. Jesus Christ is expecting us to listen and not to hear. There is difference between hearing and listening. Sometimes when you are talking to certain people, you can see that their minds are somewhere else. Sometimes, you see them on phone. Even in meetings, you have to switch off your phones and concentrate on what is been said.
Some people fail to have eye contacts with the speaker and after the conversation, they don’t remember anything. This is why many leave churches but fail to remember the sermon. The second mode is the speaking skills (slow to speak). You don’t have to interrupt someone when he or she is making a point no matter how ‘senseless’ you think it is. A speech on time from a fool is better than a speech off time from the wise. Timing is important in communication. Certain conversations spark infuriation, therefore you need to have a broad heart to handle all ‘nonsenses’ (slow to wrath).

Lift up prayers for the broad heart to handle all infuriating conversations; humility in hearing others even though you are more inclined and good listening ears for quicker understanding in the name of Jesus Christ.
