READ: Philippians 4:8
Let the words of my mouth and the MEDITATION of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.
-Psalms 19:14 | NKJV
Meditation is one aspect of the Word of God that one needs to take note of. When Moses died, God chose Joshua in his stead. A man diligent in his affairs, carefully doing his job as an associate to Moses, was tapping so much from his senior Pastor. He knew Moses was the one who was given the law to give to the Israelites but how Moses interpreted the law to them was one of a kind. The depth of Moses understanding of the laws of God was more than the Jew layman. He discovered that, Moses spent more time thinking about the things of God in his mind and heart after his physical meetings with the Lord.
That gave rise to his prowess concerning the laws of God, making him distinct. When Joshua was appointed by God as the leader of Israel, what he was told in Joshua 1:8 was the same thing that Moses was doing for the Lord. Joshua was told he needed to meditate on the Word of God day and night so his ways would be prosperous. What is meditation, someone will ask? Meditation is the engagement of mental exercise for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness, reflection or contemplation and planning or projection of someone or something.
The words of the Bible is not physical but rather spiritual (John 6:63). The reason many believers lack understanding of the Word of God is that they don’t study the words of the Bible. Many believers are fond of following a Bible reading plan but they don’t bother understanding what they had read. To understand the Bible, you should move from the realm of reading to the realm of studying and to the realm of meditation. Studying the Word is very important because it makes the Word of God dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16). To abide in Christ Jesus, His words must abide in you first (John 15:7). That is not all.
You have to ask the questions of the how’s, why’s, what’s of what you have studied. Your mind then needs to be attentive to the teacher of the Word who is the Holy Spirit. As He sees you need help in the mind, He will get closer and explain things to you (also known as inspiration). The secret of all innovations is meditation. If you meditate on money, you will be inspired by the Spirit of mammon to make money. If you meditate on the Word of God, you will be inspired to understand the Word. The Bible was written for us through meditation as the Authors were inspired by God to write (2 Timothy 3:16).
