TWO-EDGED SWORD
David Abankwah
READ: Deuteronomy 28:1-68

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any TWO-EDGED SWORD, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
-Hebrews 4:12 | NKJV

A two-edged sword or a double-edged sword is something that has or can have both favourable or good and unfavourable or evil consequences. There are many attributes of the Word of God we can appreciate in Hebrews 4:12. The Word of God is alive but not dead (John 1:4; Revelation 19:13). The Word of God is powerful but not powerless. The Word of God is sharper but not blunt. The Word of God is capable of piercing or assessing or entering the soul, the spirit, (spiritual), the joints and marrow (physical) and until He is done, He will not leave, cease, exit or return to God void (Isaiah 55:11).

The Word of God also discerns, judges, separates, detects or senses sin and righteousness of the thoughts and intents of the heart but never confuses, mixes things up or mistakes or take every word or action of individuals as a normal thing. The last attribute which God will be speaking to us about is the attribute of double-edgedness. The Word of God is not only about prosperity or blessings but also about curses. The Word of God is not only about grace but also about condemnation. The Word of God is not only about mercy but also about judgement. The Word has its positive and negative sides.

The Word of God is not only about New Jerusalem but also about the lake of fire or the second death. The Word of God is not only about sin and iniquity but also about righteousness and holiness. Many Ministers present the positive side of the Word of God to the sheep and hide the negative side because of their material gains but that should not be the case. The God who is graceful, merciful, loving, forgiving, or caring, is the same God who is also justice (Deuteronomy 32:39). God lived in peace with man in the Garden of Eden but when man sinned, he cursed and banished him from His presence.

One day I went to a wedding and the officiating Pastor blessed the couple with the blessings of Deuteronomy 28:1-15. When he was done, I reasoned that he only used one-side of the edge of the sword which were blessings and left the other edge which were curses (Deuteronomy 28:16-68). Many church members don’t want to hear this truth that’s why they heed to false doctrines (2 Timothy 4:3). The effect of the two-edged sword of the Word of God is dependent on the cause of action that the individual lives. When you live a bad life, the consequence of evil from the Word of God will come upon you and vice versa.

Lift up prayers for the strength to engage in the acts of righteousness, holiness and sanctification so the edge of the Sword of God’s Word for eternal life can be your portion hereafter in the name of Jesus Christ.
