THE COUPLET RIVALS

For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

God is One but why did He create things in couplets or pairs? During creation we saw Him creating the heavens and earth. That is a pair. We saw Him speaking light into being to separate the darkness, giving us two rivals for the first time. He created animate beings in pairs – female and male. He then made humans to be body and soul. The soul got corrupted through the deceit of the devil and the nature of sin entered man to corrupt his soul. Since then, the body and the soul have become rivals since then. When someone is a sinner, he is controlled or influenced or led by evil force(s). The first couplet rivalry is between the god of sin and your soul.
It is the intention of the god of sin to rule over your soul. To do that, he has to break down the defences of your soul in order to control him. He overcomes your soul by blinding the mind’s eye of your soul so you won’t understand the sinful life you are living, why you are living it and where the sin you are committing will lead you after you die. You become wise in your own eyes and think that those who are serving God are old-fashioned, uncivilized, illiterates, and stupid people. As you live in sin, you normally hate it and wish to stop but you can’t. You wish to stop fornication, but you can’t. You were even surprised the first time you spoke the truth.
The god of sin that is living in you is what influences you to do what you do. You can’t commit sin without an evil spirit and you can’t live in holiness without the Spirit of God. When you are controlled by evil spirits, nothing good can ever thrive in you. You will desire to serve God well, but you can’t. The evil spirit rivals your desire to serve God because the flesh is carnal and the soul is also won by him. Anytime you try to live in righteousness, the evil spirit wages war against the good conscience of obeying God’s Word you have, making you a prisoner of the law of sin. Only the Spirit of God can set you free (2 Corinthians 3:17).
Now, the second couplet rivalry is between the Spirit of God and your flesh (Galatians 5:17). Because the flesh was created from the earth which was formless, void and full of darkness in Genesis 1:2, only the Spirit of God who is also the Word of God can overcome (Genesis 1:2-3). Anytime the Spirit of God wants you to fast, the body will quickly diagnose you that you have stomach ulcer. Anytime you are led by the Spirit of God to read the Bible, the eyes of your flesh will tell you he is only good enough for sleeping. Anytime you are led to go to church after work, the flesh will tell you to do overtime and miss church.
