WHEN TO SAY NO
David Abankwah
READ: Genesis 14:21-24
But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
-Matthew 5:37 | NKJV
When God called Abraham, he took one of his nephews with him. This nephew was called Lot. After battling in life, ministry and Godliness, God enriched him with wealth and Lot also benefited from it. He also became a wealthy man. But there came a time that, the herdsmen of the livestock of Lot had rifts with the herdsmen of the livestock of Abraham and they had to separate themselves. Lot left to Sodom and Abraham stayed in Mamre. There came a time that the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah formed alliances with the kings of Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela and waged war against the kings of nations, Shinar, and Ellasar, this five kings against five.
When the Kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fought and reached a place of asphalt pits of the Valley of Siddim, they fled as a sign of surrender of defeat and their goods were taken including Lot and his household. When Abraham heard of this, he came to the rescue of Lot and his households. But when the king of Sodom crossed path with Abraham he asked that, he should exchange the people with the goods he had rescued. This was a very slippery temptation. If it had been our time, many would have fallen. But Abraham had already made a pledge to the Lord that he would not return with any spoils of Sodom which the world would have thought he was made rich by it.
Abraham had to say no to the King of Sodom. The spoils that Abraham recovered, were much to make him rich. He could have gone against the pledge he had with God. He could have sinned. He could have flowed with the world. He could have engaged in the lust of the flesh, eyes, and pride of life but he chose to flow in the steps of Christ. What situation or temptation are you facing now? Are you going to bow down to the world because of money? Are you going to exchange your womanhood as your pride for job? Are you going to exchange your righteousness for sinful acts? If only you can be determined like Abraham, you will sail through.
Jesus Christ was even presented with many evil temptations which He could have said yes to it. Yet, He had to choose righteousness above sin. As believers, we have to say yes to righteousness and say no to sin. Your boyfriend wants to sleep with you before marrying you as a sign of your proof of love. Such nonsense! Say no! Many believers are falling away just because they don’t know when to say yes and when to say no. They say yes to sin thinking that they can ask for forgiveness from God anytime they feel like. Never compromise because the appeal of sin looks juicy. Stand by the Truth of God’s word and live by it alone so you can overcome all lusts of the world and its temptations.
