WHY JESUS WALKED ON WATER
David Abankwah
READ: Matthew 14:22-32

WHEN YOU PASS THROUGH THE WATERS, I WILL BE WITH YOU; AND THROUGH THE RIVERS, THEY SHALL NOT OVERFLOW YOU. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.
-Isaiah 43:2 | NKJV

Every Sunday School student will bear with me that, at least he or she has heard about Jesus Christ walking on water, but least among us know why He did so. Before Jesus Christ walked on water, the Word of God had said in Isaiah 43:2 that when we pass through waters, they will not overflow us for He will be with us. The shadow of this Scripture’s fulfillment before the writing of Isaiah 43 had happened in the life of Noah when he and his family were saved by the ark God told him to prepare. While the flood overflown the earth (symbol of sinners), Noah and his family (symbol of the church) were saved because God was with them.

Before Isaiah 43:2, those who had passed through fire without it burning them happened in the life of Lot and his children. After Isaiah 43:2, the fulfillment of those who passed through fire without it burning them, happened in the life of Hananiah (Shadrach), Mishael (Meshach), and Azariah (Abednego). God being with us in the waters in Isaiah 43:2, was fulfilled, when Jesus Christ was with the disciples when they were passing through the waters (lake of Galilee). This started when after feeding thousands with few bread and fish, Jesus Christ left to pray for a while. He saw the need to pray because He saw what was coming which the disciples knew nothing about.

When the disciples set off on the waters which is a typology of the world (Satan and his cohorts), the church which comprised of the disciples, began to face strong winds and raging waters. Satan and his cohorts saw that Jesus Christ was not around so it was a perfect opportunity to capsize the boat which is the church so he could end Christianity. Satan had long planned to end Christianity but the more he tries, the more it will stand because the gates of hell can never prevail against it. Jesus Christ aware of what was happening and Him wanting to fulfil Isaiah 43:2, decided to walk on the sea to meet His church.

The feet of Jesus Christ is peace because the world is His footstool and the heavens is His dwelling place. Immediately His feet touched the waters, all the Satan and his cohorts were losing their grip. The light of the world was on the waters coming and darkness couldn’t comprehend Him. He walked on the waters as a triumphant sign for the church. If you don’t follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, you can never overcome this crazy world of raging storms and blistering waters. The question is, do you know Jesus Christ? Have you accepted Him as your Lord and Master? Have you entrusted all your life into His hands?

Lift up prayers for the peace of God to overcome every raging storm and blistering waters in your godliness, ministry, and life in the name of Jesus Christ.

It takes faith to walk through the wavering storms of life and blistering waters of Christianity.
