READ: Numbers 30:2

“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’
-Matthew 5:33 | NKJV

Oath taking remained one of the most deliberated and controversial topics that Jesus Christ had to address in Matthew 5:33. Even now, many Ministers don’t even agree with Jesus Christ on the things He said, saying that He wouldn’t have said what He said when He was to be in our generation now. In Matthew 5:33, Jesus Christ said that we should not swear falsely. Many people take oaths and act otherwise. That is a false oath. But why should you even take an oath knowing that you are a truthful person? Proving that you are a truthful person by taking an oath will not change anything. The world has become so corrupt that your oath taking will not change their minds about what they think about you.

Many people hold the Bible, take an oath, and still lie or live contrary to what is being said without knowing the meaning and the consequence of what they are doing. This brings us to what an oath is. An oath is a solemn promise about your behavior or your actions. Often, when we take an oath, the promise invokes a divine being. For example, you might swear to God or a god that something is true or swear on the Bible or Quran that something is true. There are many oaths around us which we can look into it for our appreciation. 1. Hippocratic Oath: This oath is an oath historically taken by physicians and other healthcare professionals swearing to practice medicine honestly.

  1. Oath of Allegiance: Oath of allegiance is an oath whereby a subject or citizen acknowledges a duty of allegiance and swears loyalty to monarch or country. 3. Oath of Citizenship: The Oath of citizenship is an oath taken by immigrants that officially naturalizes immigrants into citizens. 4. Oath of office: Oath of office is an oath or affirmation a person takes before undertaking the duties of an office. 5. Pauper’s Oath: Pauper’s Oath is a sworn statement or oath taken by a person that he or she is completely without any money or property. 6. Veterinarian’s Oath: Veterinarian’s oath is an oath taken by veterinarians as practitioners of veterinary medicine in a manner similar to the Hippocratic Oath. 2. Marriage Oaths: Oaths taken before the altar of God for not divorcing a spouse even when worse things happen. Many marriage couples think they can break their oaths just because they were not making such promises to God on their own but they were led by a Minister to recite it after him. Whether you recited after someone or not, you have taken an oath and you need to do as you said. You can’t divorce your spouse when the person is blind, sexually inactive, jobless, epileptic, mad, can’t cook well, and what have you. 8. Salvation Oath: Accepting Jesus Christ into your life and taking an oath for walking with Him without sin, is a serious oath believers must take note of. We have to honour it by living in holiness.

Lift up prayers for the grace of God to keep hold of your tongue from making false oaths you know you can’t fulfill and the strength to carry out any oath you have made to God.

Quote
It is profanity to swear falsely by the name of the Lord
