LOSING POSSESSIONS
David Abankwah
If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.
-Matthew 5:40 | NKJV
There are many reasons for suing but most especially, it is an underlying issue behind it. Without any case, there is no need wasting the time of Judges, lawyers, the defendant, and the audience as well. Being sued often has something to do with an issue between two or more parties that has not reached a sounding agreement. There are trivial issues that don’t need court to settle the case, but because many rich people can afford hiring best lawyers, they don’t mind if they are even guilty or not. As the Akan Proverb goes that, ‘There is no case that cutlass is used to settle but the mouth.’ There are many possessions that have been lost just because the matter couldn’t be settled before lawsuits.
As Jesus Christ said, it is better to settle a matter before it getting to court than to suffer the penalty meted out after it. Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny. -Matthew 5:25-26 | NKJV. Many believers who have been sued and lost possessions of lands, houses, companies, money and what have you, lose faith in God and do not recover from it. Least do they know that, what is happening in their lives had already happened to many believers like them.
When we often read the life of Job in the Bible, we think that his story is just a fairytale and it can’t happen in our generation. As it happened to him and he lost all his possessions, so can it happen to us. Sometimes what you have, prevents you from serving God well. You will bear with me that, before you were seeking God for marriage, your Christian life was on fire, but after you married, you no longer serve God the way you used to. Sometimes losing possessions is a sign of a test of faith from God and also a sign of a temptation from the devil. But if you are a child of God, they can’t come without the possession of God. In all circumstances, you still have to thank God for all good times and bad times.
Sometimes too, God makes you lose possessions because He is telling you that, you are selfish, wicked, and stingy. Instead of you letting go what you have, so others too can benefit, you are not giving. We want God to bless us but we don’t want to give. How can you receive something from someone if your hands are already full? You first have to empty your hands before you can receive. Because we are holding on to the old things we possess, God cannot bless us with new things. If we are not ready to give the tunic and cloaks we possess, God is not going to replace them with new ones. We don’t have to be sued or coerced to give what we need to give. That is not the definition of who a cheerful giver is.

Lift up prayers for the heart of love to give cheerfully, not only when asked or forced in the name of Jesus Christ.
Quote
Sometimes God causes you to lose certain possessions as a sign that you are selfish.
