VAIN REPETITIONS
David Abankwah
READ: Ecclesiastics 5:2
And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
-Matthew 6:7 | NKJV
Using words in prayer to impress God or whoever is closer to you, is what is called vain repetition. Jesus Christ warned us about vain repetition concerning the habit of model prayer. What God wants, is not your big vocabulary when you are praying. You can use simple language to convey your prayer points to God. God knows all languages because it is in the throne that He sits on that hosts all of them. He understands all things and before you even pray, He knows what you need. It is very important we present our petitions to God in languages we know and not someone else’s we don’t in prayer, so the message of what we want God to do, can be clearly presented.
New tongues speaking is good in prayer for those who are believers but when it is used by sinners, it becomes vain repetitions. Also, new tongues speaking edifies the believer, but sometimes God wants you to make your petitions before Him in plain language, clearly stating the specifics of what you want. It is vain repetitions to pray general prayers without clearly presenting what you need. For example, you can’t intercede for someone you don’t know his or her name. It is vain repetition as a believer to pray to God for Him to deliver you from sins generally, without clearly stating the sin you are battling with. If you want God to save you from fornication, say it and stop praying general prayers.
Many people who lead prayers in church often do this mistake. They don’t want the congregation to know the sin they are facing, so they cover up during prayer time. So they often use tongues speaking during forgiveness trying to impress the church that they are righteous. There is time for tongues speaking (thus praying in the spirit) and there is time to pray in plain language (praying with your mind). In Matthew 6:7, Jesus Christ also mentioned heathen. A heathen is an unconverted member of a people or nation who does not acknowledge the God of the Bible. Simply, heathens are sinners and not God’s children. Every child of God have faith in Him and obeys Him.
It is a vain repetition to pray to God in sin because the prayer of a sinner is an abomination to God. The prayers a sinner prayers that God hears is the prayer of salvation leading him to become born again. John 9:31 says that, God doesn’t hear sinners but those who but those who are worshipers of God and do His will as well. The prayers of many believers are unheard by God just because of sin. Instead of repenting from their sins, they pray to God for Him to do something for them. First, repent from your sins, and seek after the Kingdom of God, His righteousness and all other things shall follow you. Your prayers will not be an abomination but a sweet smelling incense.

Lift up prayers for deliverance from any evil spiritual influences that lead you into the activities of sin so your prayers will always be answered by God in the name of Jesus Christ.
Quote
As God answers prayers of the righteous, evil spirits also answer the prayers of sinners.
