WORRY ABOUT LIFE
David Abankwah
READ: 1 Peter 5:7
“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
-Matthew 6:25 | NKJV
In Matthew 6:25, Jesus Christ told us not to worry about physiological needs thus: food, water, and clothing. He went on to say that life is more than these needs. So if we don’t have to worry about these needs so should we not work for them? In fact, the Bible speaks against idleness or laziness. The fact that Jesus Christ told us not to worry about our lives to get the basic needs of life doesn’t mean we don’t have to make any effort to to get them. God is the provider of everything we have but there is one thing about God. God works miracles but God doesn’t work magic. Divine miracle is the usage of a vessel or medium or natural principle for a supernatural occurrence.
But magic is often the bypassing of a physical, a medium or nature for a supernatural occurrence. God didn’t fill their bellies with manna from heaven but He had to rain down the manna so the Israelites could work by gathering them. If you expect God to feed you directly without doing anything, then that cannot happen. God can only bless the hands of your work and not bless you through magic means when you are idle or lazy. God cannot push you against your will. Even in ministry, He works through you when you avail yourself for the work. You can think of how to work the right way so you can get your basic needs but you shouldn’t worry about it, though, worry and thinking are similar.
Worrying about your basic needs and thinking about your basic needs differs. Worry about basic needs is sin but thinking about your basic needs is not. You can’t say you are working and your mind is not focused on what you are doing. To get money, you can’t say you shouldn’t apply the mind. God gave us the mind to use for right application of work. That is why a Christian cannot do any job. Meeting your basic needs come from the work you do whether ministerial or secular. Being said, that doesn’t also mean you should focus all your attention towards work. As believers, we should meditate on God’s word and stop worrying about basic needs which will never be fulfilled by them.
But it seems the minds of many believers have gone on vacation when they have to apply their minds to work. When God even gives a business plan for believers, they think it is the devil but they have been blaming God for not meeting their needs. Where should God pass through to bless you if you don’t work? When we don’t do what God wants us to do so He can meet our needs, we harm ourselves. God has even told someone to quit a particular job that is evil so He can bless him or her but that person is paid well so he thinks he is okay. Yet, that same person is still worried why he cannot meet certain needs. What basic need can’t God provide when we entrust our lives in His hands?
