PASSOVER
David Abankwah
(SERIES: Day 3)

⁷…For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. ⁸Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
-1 Corinthians 5:7-8 | NKJV

So, Moses and the Israelites did as God had instructed them. Each tribe of Israel, representing the various body of Christ – the church, killed lambs and used the blood to mark their doors. The last idol for Egypt was the firstborns of humans and animals. As God told Abraham that, after the 400 years of exile, He would judge the Egyptians, His word came to pass when He passed judgment in the time of Abib (April). He killed every firstborn of the Egyptians. He also killed the firstborns of animals. God’s Word will surely to pass no matter how long it takes.

It is this last sign God gave Pharaoh that made him release the Israelites. Likewise, it was the death of Jesus Christ that made Satan release the souls he had captured through sin. Otherwise, we would have been in exile on the land of Egypt – the world for the rest of all eternity. God then told the Israelites that, they should do well to keep the Passover every year because they would always remember the deliverance He brought them in Egypt (Numbers 9:2). Humans by nature, forget things easily. God knew Israelites would forget the time of their salvation and go back to their old vomit of slavery.

Christians also have a Passover to celebrate. For us, it was not an animal that was sacrificed but Jesus Christ – a God. In the Old dispensation, the lamb that was sacrificed was the symbol of the actual or
true Lamb of God who some time to come, will also take away the sins and iniquities of the world once and for all (Romans 6:10). Our Passover who is Jesus Christ was sacrificed on the cross during the sixth day of twilight, fulfilling the lambs of the Israelites who were killed on twilight (Exodus 12:6). The houses of Israel during the Passover represent our bodies which are the temples of God (1 Corinthians 3:16).

As Jesus Christ was sacrificed for us, His blood is now used by God to mark the
doorposts (hearts) of Christians (Revelation 3:20). This is because in the day of judgement when Jesus Christ passes through the world at night (like a thief comes without prior warning or notice), He would not strike the ones whose hearts have been marked by His blood with the second death which is the lake of fire. Like the Israelites were told to celebrate the Passover, Christians are also entreated in 1 Corinthians 5:8 to hold a Passover festival in purity, so we can celebrate our salvation in remembrance of Jesus’s redemption with His blood on the cross.
