CHRISTIAN HEAD COVERING
David Abankwah
SERIES: Day 2
For she had said to the servant, “Who is this man walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” SO SHE TOOK A VEIL AND COVERED HERSELF.
-Genesis 24:65 | NKJV
While many believers see Paul as the one who charged the church of Corinth to uphold the tradition of Christian head covering, little do they do know that head covering even takes it root from the Old Testament. The Old Testament was the shadow of the New Testament to come. The Old Testament was the shadow of Christianity to come and it is the New Testament that confirms it as such. So as many believers still think the Old Testament is outmoded, the New Testament is just the revision of the Old Testament. The New Testament contains a lot of passages from the Old Testament, as it’s fulfillment, because the intention of the NT was not meant to abolish the OT.
So the topic of Christian head covering in the New Testament is just the fulfilment of what had already happened in the Old Testament. Let us therefore dive into a little history about head covering in the Old Testament. The first passage of Scripture that recorded head covering/veiling in the OT is Genesis 24:65. This happened after Eliezer of Damascus, a servant of Abraham who had been led by the Lord successfully found a bride (Rebekah) for his Master’s son, and was returning home. Isaac was working in the field and when Rebekah asked of him, she got to know that it was the man she was getting married to. Immediately, she took a veil and covered herself as a sign of her pride.
What happens when many women of this age have relationship with men? Instead of them keeping themselves (veiling), they do makeups, catwalks, dress seductively so they can lure them into their nets of marriage. Today before believers marry, they had already slept so many times and yet the bride will still veil herself, as a sign that the man has never slept with her before. But it is a lie. The veiling of a wife to be before the altar, covers the head as well because it is a sign of telling God she is submitting herself under the authority of the man she is getting married to. Veiling yourself before God’s altar is not a child’s play. You have to mean business otherwise your marriage will be ruined.
The second instance of head covering in the OT can be seen in Numbers 5:18. Since the wife is the glory of her husband and the head of her is the man, a sign to show her faithfulness to such an authoritative figure over her life, is the head covering or the veil. Anytime a wife commits adultery in Israel, she would be brought to the altar and her head would be uncovered by the Priest as a sign that she had left the umbrella or the authority of her husband and had unlawfully submitted herself under the authority of another man. The head covering is a sign of submission especially in marriage. It shows a sign of dutifully commitment and honour of your husband.

Lift up prayers for humility to easily submit yourself under any authoritative figure God has placed over your life, Godliness, and ministry in the name of Jesus Christ.
