For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
-1 Timothy 2:5 | NKJV

A typical Ghanaian child will bear with me that, when he or she is in the process of being punished severely (usually by caning) by his father, his mother will come to his rescue sometimes. Usually, the mother’s feeling of fear for injury or death that the child will be inflicted with, is what makes her confront her husband to limit the number of strokes. Some mothers go to the extreme of stopping the punishment by holding the cane or getting it out of the hands of their husbands. Some mothers don’t mind receiving the punishment for their children’s sake. The feeling of gratefulness for escaping the punishment is a fairly indebted one which many children show towards their mothers for their timely intervention and mediation.

That is why the majority of children like getting closer to their mothers more than their fathers and when there are fathers’ and mothers’ days, there comes a vast difference of gifting these parents receive. While one receives a little, another gets the lion’s share. It is the power of mediation that reaps this dramatic result for the mothers. Many people don’t like to be chastised yet they don’t want to do the right thing. Fathers are seen as strict, straight, and no-nonsense gods of the house. For a child to approach his father for an urgent need, he has to hire his mother as his mediator. Mothers have a soft touch starter, that can propel the husband’s heart engine towards their own preference.

I remember I took a French’s leave from the house to play outside. When I returned home, my father was around. I knew danger was looming because anytime my father returned from work and I was not in the house, I would be caned for my absence. So, in my head, I was calculating the number of strokes I would receive from him. The punishment that awaited me was sure after seeing a cane beside my father. As he approached me to unleash his fury, my mother came and stood between us and made peace. I was amazed to see the fury of my dad quenched so quickly and that day, I was so lucky to have been spared. Justice was tempered with mercy because of my mother’s mediation.

Mediators are like mothers who have a way of bringing peace between two parties. Mediators are usually peacemakers and such people are a blessing (Matthew 5:. When Jesus Christ saw that the relationship between God and man was not a good one, he came down, died, and used His blood as a ransom for us. Nothing can quench God’s fury without the blood of His Son in sight. Still, Jesus Christ is still pleading the course of repentance for sinners. His sole aim is to make peace between God and man. This is what Christians must learn. Our evangelism, prayers, fasting, fellowshipping, Bible reading and meditation, and other acts of faith, must be centred on the course of mediation.
