HOLY CALLING
David Abankwah
READ: Hebrews 9:15
Who has saved us and called us with a HOLY CALLING, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,
-2 Timothy 1:9 | NKJV
1 quite remember a story a Pastor told us during his sermon delivery. He said, there was one lady who was not receiving
phone calls for a long time. She waited for people to call her but no call was coming through. She had two phones and two sims (subscriber identity modules). She thought, ‘Maybe my two sims are not working that is why no one is calling me.’ So, she took one phone and tried calling the other line. The call came through and she knew it was not the fault of the sim or the sim operators, neither was there any fault from the phone. It was because as much as she wanted people to call her, someone else too was expecting her call. That is what most ladies are.
Let us ask ourselves this question, why was she so eagerly waiting for people to call her instead of her calling them? What was in communication that she desired earnestly to get from others? What feeling could she have had if that moment, someone special called her? When someone calls you, it is because there is a need. Important people don’t call without no better reason. You are special when people call you. When people call you often, it is because you are very important. When you receive numerous calls, it is because you are a solution to the situations people face. Calling, shouldn’t be a bother to the one who is at the receiving end but it should rather be a privilege to be called.
One funny thing is that, as a kid any time your mother calls you for an errand, you sometimes want to turn deaf ears to her. Sometimes you chuckle or sigh or even go the extreme of shouting at her to depict your frustration for the ‘bothering call.’ Yet, when his girlfriend who didn’t even give birth to him, calls, you see him changing his tone into a lighter one so he can talk to her in a sweet or romantic appeal so her heart can be touched. God who is greater than our parents or girlfriends also calls His children. He is aware, we will chuckle at His call sometimes. He knows very well that we will snub Him, yet that doesn’t change His mind concerning His plan for our holy calling.
Our inactions towards His call, doesn’t move Him out of His way to abort the purpose He has for us. As humans, we are short-sighted concerning the judgement of the future when God will destroy everyone who turned deaf ears to His calling. The calling of God may not be spectacular as Paul’s own was, but could be gentle and yet powerful as Matthew’s one was: ‘Follow me.’ You don’t have to see God speaking to you in a vision about your call before you heed to it. He always calls you through His Word. Jesus Christ is calling you now through this devotional. Will you heed to His call now or turn deaf ears again? Always remember that you have today, but you may not have tomorrow.
