AFRAID OF FALLING

READ: Hebrews 10:31

Therefore let him who thinks he STANDS TAKE HEED LEST HE FALL.

-1 Corinthians 10:12 | NKJV

On one faithful morning which kickstarted the new year in grand style, I wanted to prepare a delicacy. As I was making the fire, I decided to climb the staircase to pick something. I didn’t know whether I was standing well or not or whether the floor was slippery or not or whether I was careless about keeping my composure well or not, but during my locomotion, I nearly fell down. I became afraid of the negative outcome that could have brought to my health. I began to ponder over the situation to find out what was the possible cause of this fall which I escaped. As I was thinking about it, I heard the voice of the Spirit of God telling me: ‘You see how afraid you became because of falling?’

The Holy Spirit continued, ‘The fear you felt, is what Christians must have anytime they are confronted with sin, or when they are about to commit sin.’ Fear of committing sin, is the sure evidence that shows you fear God. Jesus Christ said that if we love Him, we should obey His commandments. Obeying Christ’s commandments, is eschewing evil, and you can’t eschew evil if you don’t have the fear of God in you. And this fear is what will prompt you to flee from falling into sin. If we genuinely have the fear of God, that will prevent us from falling into sin, many people wouldn’t have been secretly sinning, and wouldn’t have still kept the intention that they are still Christians.

In 1 Corinthians 10:12, it seems that many people are confident of their standings in Christianity of which they think that they can never fall, but they should be expectant of uninviting situations that can shake the foundation and roofs of their faith and righteous lives. No one is above the fall of sin, and that is why we need to have the fear of God in us anytime sin tempts us. It is discreet awareness and the strength of God that we need to have to overcome sin. This is what will help us keep our grounds of faith well in the Lord always without falling away. Sin will keep encroaching upon the space of our Christianity, ministry, workplaces, schools, houses, societies, and our personal lives.

But as children of light, we must stand and shine the glorious light of true repentance. Many people quote Proverbs 24:16 that, the righteous shall fall seven times and rise again. How can you be a righteous person and still manage to fall into sin? Many people quote that to cover up their deliberate sins instead of overcoming them. Falling and rising seven times was a prophecy about Jesus Christ’s carrying of the cross to Calvary. Because of the weight of sin He was carrying, He fell seven times. Do you think God has time for entertaining your sinful behaviours all in the name of grace? Righteousness is a life we deliberately practise, and not an expectation of manna from the sky.

¹Lift up prayers against the habit of self-righteousness that makes you unable to heed to the imminent dangers of backsliding. ²Lift up prayers against the thought of contentment concerning your spirituality that makes you unable to work out the works of your salvation and that of others more than what you are doing now. ³Lift up prayers for the fear of the Lord to hold on to your faith always onto the very end. ⁴Lift up prayers for the Holy Spirit to enlighten your eyes to see every sin, iniquity, transgression, and abomination that are responsible for causing your downfall. ⁵Lift up prayers against every evil spirit that works against your body, soul, and spirit responsible for causing your fall in your Christian life. ⁶Lift up prayers to God to strengthen your spiritual waist, thighs, knees, and legs to stand firm as a rock so you will not fall in the name of Jesus Christ.

Quote

“To have the fear of God is to be afraid of falling from the faith you have in God and His Son Jesus Christ that leads to righteousness”
