“And I will execute VENGEANCE in anger and fury on the nations that have not heard.”
-Micah 5:5 | NKJV
In this world where many people love evil more than good, and the intention of vengeance keeps on piling up, the message of salvation needs to be preached always. God expects us to live right in the world of rampant perversion. He expects us to show mercy, grace, leniency, forgiveness, and remission for the wrongs people have offended us with. Most believers don’t know how to pardon others for the evil they have committed against them. Their hearts and minds are set on paying back their offenders. In the algebra of hurt, vengeance needs to be taken out of the equation. Vengeance means punishment inflicted in retaliation for an injury or offence caused.
In the Old Dispensation, when Moses was a Judge and Leader of the Jews, he enacted a law of vengeance that spelt out that: …..An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth….. –Leviticus 24:19-21. Meaning, repay every bad deed someone does against you. So, if someone slaps you, slap him too. If someone insults you, insult the person too. In Israel, that was the culture they knew. But when Jesus Christ came, He brought new laws but fulfilled the old that needed to be kept. You would hear Jesus Christ saying that ‘you were once told that, you should do this or that, but I sayto you that, do this thing rather.’ He cancelled the law of revenge and brought a new law of clemency.
This new law of clemency is found in Matthew 5:39: ‘…. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.’ Meaning, any bad thing someone does to you, don’t retaliate. You may have the will, opportunity, and might to inflict the same evil or even greater than that to the person, but hear the voice of God speaking through me: DON’T RETALIATE! See it as normal. Nothing can happen to you if God doesn’t allow it. It is Godliness to show clemency before the countenance of vengeance. Humans by nature loves those who loves them, but hates those who hate them. So if you are human, you can never leave vengeance in the hands of God.
There are various works plants, animals, humans, angels, 24 elders, and 4 living creatures do for God. But vengeance is one of the only professional works of God, no one can do for Him. Don’t try to do the job of God He has never entrusted into your hands. Even if you are a Minister of God, God does not expect you to work out vengeance. He only knows how to do it best. All we need to do, is to be merciful to people for the wrongs they do. There is a blessing in showing mercy and only blessed people have the ability to outdo vengeance (Matthew 5:7). If you are not merciful but always retaliates, then don’t ask forgiveness from God, because it is mercy that yields forgiveness.
