He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
-Matthew 11:15 | NKJV
Matthew 11:15 which talks about obedience to the Word of God and good counsel, reminds me of a story concerning the deer and the lion. In the animal kingdom, deer was a friend to the lion. They were two bosom friends, who were not willing to part ways with each other. Generations passed, but they still carried on with their friendship for ages until one day when the tables turned. When they were happily playing together, the lion tried to attack the deer, because he was really hungry. If you are hungry, why do you have to eat your friend? Deer responded, ‘Good friend, why do you want to use me as your meal amid the heat of this day because you have not done this before?’
The lion then responded, ‘You are very lucky today; tomorrow you may not escape.’ Seeing the opportunistic mind of the lion coupled with the mindset of friends-of-benefit agenda and wickedness, deer decided to part ways with the lion. Years passed, both deer and lion procreated and had families unto themselves. Deer told her tender children, ‘You know how much your mummy loves you, but I want to tell you something you should never forget. Some time ago, lion and I were friends but now, we are enemies. Never trust lions and never mingle with them. Don’t go on an outing alone, but rather go in groups and never stay in town for longer than usual.
If you disobey me,you will find yourself in my foe’s belly.’ All the children responded ‘We have heard you, mummy.’ On the other hand, lion too had also told his children to befriend the deers so he would attack them unnoticed and use them as food. After the deer finished advising her children, she set off to work. The cubs came to the deer’s compound and called the young deers out for a play. After all, our mother is not around, one disobedient deer who doubted the words of its mother, said. He came out to play with the cubs and in no time, the disobedient deer was killed and used for dinner. After leaving his head for breakfast, one cub was not satisfied. He ate one of the deer’s ears.
After subsequent interrogation, the lion marched her children to the deer’s place. He said, ‘Deer, are you sure your children have two ears?’ The deer answered, ‘Those who have two ears are those who are those who are only here with me.’ The instruction of the deer is the Word of God. His fierce enemy is the roaring lion – the devil. God knows perfectly that we have ears, but why was He asking us in Matthew 11:15 to hear? Most people are like the disobedient deer who was the hearer of the Word but not the doer (James 1:22) and suffered the penalty of death (Romans 6:23). Anyone who disobeys God’s word will suffer the fate of eternal death (Revelation 21:8).
